Mexico Firetruck
Project Completed
Beth Powell reported to the club today that the trucks have crossed the border and are waiting for the titles to be cleared before they make the journey to Soledad.
August 31st Meeting
President
Pete Beck brought the meeting to order. Sammy Ballard gave the invocation and
led the pledge of allegiance. Joseph Williams' name was read before
the club for the second time. Next Tuesday he will be official! Welcome
aboard, Joseph! Pete mentioned that Lloyd Carter continues to improve
after his heart surgery. We look forward to his coming back to join us
soon. Sang Ho Lee asked for some help on his newly redefined Club
Projects Committee. Frank Longest was the first to volunteer. We hope
many more will join him to make this one of the most exciting committees
or teams to be a part of. Sammy Ballard introduced his guest, Van Welch,
his boss. We were also privileged to have John Brooks from the Breakfast
Club.
Program:
Dave Blank, Elon University Athletic Director
David Moore was originally from Chatham County, VA. He attended Elon College and decided to settle in the area in 1972. He works in the employee benefits and insurance industry. He was part of the first wave of recruits to the club. He has been married for 38 years and has two sons.
David introduced our guest speaker, Dave Blank, the current AD at Elon University. Dave told us how he came to be at Elon. A surprising series of unforeseen circumstances saw him start at Duke as a basketball player, get injured, and transfer to South Carolina as a staffer for Coach Foster. He next became the basketball coach at Lockhaven for eight years before determining that coaching did not fit his desire to be a family man. He landed an assistant AD job at Coastal Carolina before becoming the AD. His next move was to Drake University before ending up at Elon. Dave is married and has four children.
One of Dave's priorities as the Elon AD is to develop his student athletes in interpersonal communication skills and community service. He also mentioned that he is very proud of the school's progress in facilities construction during the current economic downturn. He cited improvements to the baseball field, Alumni Gym, and the field house, as examples. He believes the university must give back to the community.
The buying consortium at the big money table had the lottery ticket that was chosen, but Micah picked the eight of clubs instead of the King. The meeting was adjourned with all standing to recite the Four Way Test.
Polio Plus Fundraiser
Don't forget to help us raise funds for RI's Polio Plus fund by attending Sandler Training's professional training seminars in Greensboro on October 18th. At only $249, it's a great deal. Every dollar goes to Rotary; so, it's a win-win effort. You get the training, and RI gets the money to eradicate polio worldwide. Spread the word. For details and to register online, click here. To download the flyer to give to others, click here. Don't forget to mention our club's name when you register.
Click on the photo above to view short video. I spotted Sammy and Julian. We will participate in October.
