February 7th Meeting
President Mac Williams arrived just in the nick of time to open the meeting.
Steve Carter gave the invocation
and led the club in the pledge of allegiance to our flag. Dexter Barbee,
Jr. introduced his son, Dustin, who just moved back to the area.
Happy Clams
and Other Announcements
-
Dexter Barbee expressed his gratitude that his son Dustin has been hired by GKN. Special thanks was also extended to Randy Perkins with Prime Personnel Resources for his help. Dexter tried to get Randy to pay the Happy Clams fee, but Randy just replied that the check is in the mail.
-
Steve Carter asked the club to keep Bernard Graybeal in our prayers because he is having surgery tomorrow.
-
David Moore said that Julian Griffin has moved back to his apartment at Twin Lakes and continues to improve after injuring his back in a fall.
-
Debbie Porch gave an update on the upcoming Valentines Dinner and Silent Auction. The details are below. So far 42 have signed up to attend. Several new auction items have been added, including a Burlington Royals package, an 8 hours of babysitting package, tickets to DPAC, a pearl necklace, lottery tickets, and artwork by Stephen Ray Miller. All auction payments must be in cash or by check. Someone asked what is the dress code. No one seemed to know, but judging by last year, Valentine's casual is acceptable. Don't forget you can get a professional Valentine's photo taken of you and your date for only $10.

Mac Williams once again mentioned the upcoming District Conference held in Charleston, SC April 19-22. He informed the club that the board voted to set aside a total of $1500 to help defray expenses of those attending the conference. A maximum of $500 will be given to any member attending the conference. The total number of attendees will be divided into the $1500 to determine how much will be given per person should more than three attend. This policy will be reviewed annually by the board.
Program: Jeanine Patten-Coble, Founder and Executive Director of Little Pink Houses of Hope
Greg
Westcott was responsible for today's program. He arranged to have our
speaker come, but was in Vegas, presumably on business. Mac introduced
Jeanine Patten-Coble, the founder and executive director of
Little Pink Houses of Hope, a non-profit organization that exists to
provide beach getaways for breast cancer patients who might otherwise
have little to cheer them up. Jeanine said that these week-long
vacations can help provide transformational hope and lasting, cherished
memories to families undergoing the stress and trauma of breast cancer
and related treatments.
Jeanine is herself a breast cancer survivor who initially was given little chance to live by one doctor, who was since fired. During her ordeal, she and her family would take time out to go to the beach. For her it was therapeutic. It was during this time that she got the idea for Little Pink Houses of Hope. During its first year of operation, fifty families were given all-expense-paid (except for travel expenses) vacations thanks to the generosity of beach home owners, corporate sponsors, compassionate volunteers, and community support. This year promises to be even bigger, with a retreat to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands being planned.
Jeanine said that it has been a privilege to watch God work in the lives of these women and there families. Her own life has been immensely enriched by all the new relationships that have been made.
Card Pool
David Moore held the winning ticket. After sauntering up to the front table, he magnanimously gave our speaker the privilege of drawing for the Ace of Diamonds, but she failed in her mission. David claimed that he would have picked the right card. Nevertheless, the pot continues to grow!
The meeting
concluded with a recitation of Rotary's Four Way Test led by
President Mac.
